Integrative Synthesis (IS)
Answer A. Faculty: Thinking (Integrative mode). Your natural tendency to perceive patterns across time, integrate several streams of information into one understanding, and receive insight as recognition rather than deduction.
How it tends to show up
You step back from immediate engagement to let the larger pattern emerge. You often sense where things are heading before others see it, and insight can arrive as a sudden recognition before you can explain it.
An illustration
Think of the tracker, the astronomer, the strategist.
Parallels in research
- In Jung's analytical psychology, intuition perceives possibilities and patterns rather than concrete detail (Jung, 1921).
- Dual-process research separates fast, intuitive, associative thinking from slow, deliberate reasoning; Integrative Synthesis sits on the intuitive, pattern-seeing side (Evans & Stanovich, 2013).
- The default mode network is active during self-referential thought, remembering and imagining the future (Buckner et al., 2008). Its role in openness to experience is an active research area (Dubois et al., 2018).

Systematic Analysis (SA)
Answer B. Faculty: Thinking (Analytical mode). Your natural tendency to break complexity into components, build logical frameworks, value precision and consistency, and trust conclusions you can defend step by step.
How it tends to show up
You break a problem into parts and understand each one precisely. You build frameworks and systems, value logical consistency and trust what you can explain step by step.
An illustration
Think of the toolmaker, the engineer, the systematizer.
Parallels in research
- Jung's thinking function judges by logical connection and principle (Jung, 1921).
- Dual-process research describes deliberate, rule-based reasoning, and the Rational-Experiential Inventory measures a preference for this analytical style (Pacini & Epstein, 1999).
- The executive control network (frontoparietal) supports working memory, planning and goal-directed reasoning (Seeley et al., 2007).

Take the free testSocial Attunement (SO)
Answer C. Faculty: Feeling. Your natural tendency to perceive other people's emotional states, prioritize harmony, communicate with warmth and adjust your behavior to keep connection.
How it tends to show up
You notice how others are feeling and read the emotional temperature of a room. You prioritize harmony and connection.
An illustration
Think of the peacemaker, the healer, the diplomat.
Parallels in research
- Jung's feeling function judges by value and relationship; Social Attunement focuses on its interpersonal side (Jung, 1921).
- Behavioral science studies empathy and agreeableness as stable differences between people; Social Attunement is expected to relate to Agreeableness.
- Mentalizing, understanding what others think and feel, engages a network including the medial prefrontal cortex and temporoparietal junction (Frith & Frith, 2006).

Environmental Engagement (EE)
Answer D. Faculty: Willing. Your natural tendency to act on sensory information directly, engage physically with your surroundings, prefer experience over analysis and respond in real time.
How it tends to show up
You act before deliberating fully, engage the physical world directly and prefer doing to analyzing. You feel most alive when physically engaged.
An illustration
Think of the hunter, the builder, the first responder.
Parallels in research
- Jung's sensation function perceives concrete, present reality through the senses (Jung, 1921).
- Behavioral science distinguishes action-oriented, experience-led styles; Environmental Engagement is expected to relate to the active, assertive side of Extraversion.
- The sensorimotor network was among the first brain networks identified at rest (Biswal et al., 1995), and links perception directly to action.

What the dimensions describe
Natural preferences: how you tend to engage with the world when you are not forcing yourself. They describe style, not ability, intelligence or health. These parallels shaped how the four dimensions were defined. The current study tests the ICA's structure, its stability over time and its relationships with established behavioral measures. See the research program.
Common questions
What are the four dimensions?
Integrative Synthesis (seeing patterns and wholes), Systematic Analysis (understanding parts and structures), Social Attunement (perceiving how others feel) and Environmental Engagement (acting on what is in front of you).
What is a latent dimension?
Your fourth-ranked dimension: the one you use least naturally. It is your main growth area, not a weakness or a lack of ability.
